Can Lack of Sleep Make You Fat?

Researchers at the University of Chicago have discovered that chronic sleep loss can reduce the body's ability to regulate hormones and process carbohydrates.

Insufficient sleep can affect 3 hormones that contribute to obesity :
  • A decrease in Leptin, an appetite-suppressing hormone.
  • An increase in Ghrelin, the hormone that controls hunger pangs, causing greater feelings of hunger.
  • An increase in the stress hormone, Cortisol, which increases fat storage.

Sleep is important in keeping not only your waistline trim, but your brain activity balanced as well. While you're asleep , brain neurotransmitters - the chemicals that deliver messages between nerve cells in your brain - are replenished. When you don't get enough sleep, your brain chemicals become depleted, causing emotional disturbances.

A juice detox followed by a detox diet can not only help the neurotransmitters function at their best by clearning out the toxins that inhibit them, it also allows a much more restful sleep. Your body is clear of most toxins, so it doesn't have to work as hard while you are sleeping.
